Gum Disease Treatment

People are at the heart of everything we do.
Advanced dentistry. Personalized care. A better experience.

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults—and because it can develop with little or no discomfort, you may not realize there's a problem until the disease has progressed.

That's why regular dental visits and periodontal screenings are so important. At Quality Dentistry, we routinely evaluate the health of your gums and the bone supporting your teeth so we can identify problems early and recommend treatment before they become more serious.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease begins when plaque, a sticky film containing bacteria, builds up around the teeth and along the gumline. If plaque isn't removed through daily brushing, cleaning between your teeth, and professional dental care, it can harden into tartar and trigger inflammation and infection.

Over time, the infection can create spaces—or pockets—between the teeth and gums, allowing bacteria to move deeper beneath the gumline and damage the tissues and bone that support your teeth.

The Two Stages of Gum Disease

Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. Your gums may become red, swollen, or tender and may bleed when brushing or flossing. The good news is that gingivitis is generally reversible with improved oral hygiene and appropriate professional care.

Periodontitis
When gum disease is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. This more advanced form can permanently damage the gums and bone supporting your teeth, potentially leading to loose teeth and tooth loss.

Early detection matters. The sooner gum disease is identified, the more options we have to manage it and protect your natural teeth.

What Increases Your Risk?

Several factors can increase your risk of developing gum disease, including:

  • Smoking or tobacco use

  • Diabetes and certain systemic health conditions

  • Certain medications

  • Pregnancy and hormonal changes

  • Crooked or crowded teeth that are difficult to clean

  • Aging or failing dental restorations

  • Bridges that no longer fit properly

  • Inconsistent brushing and cleaning between the teeth

  • A history of periodontal disease

Know the Warning Signs

Gum disease doesn't always cause pain, so it's important to pay attention to changes in your mouth. Signs can include:

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums

  • Gums that are pulling away from your teeth

  • Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste

  • Pus or drainage around the gums

  • Teeth that feel loose or begin to separate

  • Changes in the way your teeth come together when you bite

  • Changes in how a partial denture fits

If you notice any of these symptoms, don't wait for them to become painful. We're here to help.

Personalized Gum Disease Treatment

Treatment depends on the severity of the disease and your individual needs. Our goal is to control infection, protect the supporting structures of your teeth, and help you maintain a healthy smile for years to come.

Depending on your situation, treatment may include:

  • Personalized at-home periodontal care

  • Periodontal trays

  • Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning)

  • Periodontal maintenance therapy

  • Laser-assisted gum treatment when appropriate

  • Referral to a periodontal specialist for advanced cases

  • Dental implants when tooth replacement is necessary

We'll explain your diagnosis, discuss your treatment options, and work with you to develop a plan that fits your oral health needs and goals.

Protect Your Gums. Protect Your Smile.

The best treatment for gum disease is prevention and early intervention. Brushing twice a day, cleaning between your teeth every day, maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding tobacco, and keeping your regular dental appointments can all play an important role in maintaining healthy gums.

At Quality Dentistry, we believe prevention starts with education. Our team takes the time to help you understand your oral health and what you can do to protect it.
